Game Recap: William Smith Soccer | | Paige Mullin

Herons down Golden Knights 6-0

GENEVA, N.Y.—The No. 5 William Smith College soccer team scored twice in the first half and added four second half goals to secure a 6-0 win over Clarkson in a Liberty League match played on Cozzens Field this afternoon. Junior Lauren Randaccio led the Herons with two goals.

This afternoon both William Smith and Clarkson, as well as the fans in the stands, wore purple in support of Courtney Wagner '19, the Herons Team IMPACT teammate who is battling brain cancer.

The Herons have now secured 11 straight wins and 11 consecutive shutouts and improve to 12-1-1 and 7-0-0 in conference play. First-year goalkeeper Kaileen Murray made one save to earn her ninth shutout of the year. The Golden Knights fall to 8-6-2 overall and 0-5-2 in the Liberty League.

Junior Ella McMackin opened the scoring for William Smith in the 41st minute. Her unassisted goal was her first of the year. She took the ball away from a Clarkson defender and immediately drilled her shot into the back of the net. Just 2:31 later, Randaccio notched her first goal of the afternoon, connecting on a header after a perfectly placed cross from sophomore Evie Manning.

Just 3:07 into the second half, junior Brie Ruane registered her seventh goal of the year to make it 3-0. Junior Kara Shue pushed a pass from the right side to find Ruane right out in front to send her shot into the back of the net. In the 60th minute, junior Shay Callahan headed home a cross from senior Krista Longo to put the Herons up by four. Randaccio struck again in the 76th minute. Sophomore Kate Spiegel played the ball into the box from the right side. First-year Megan Richard just tapped it to Randaccio on her left, who drilled her shot into the goal. It was Randaccio's seventh goal this season. In the 87th minute, junior MacKenzie Smith logged the final goal of the game, one-timing a pass from sophomore Cailin MacLean. It was Smith's first goal of the season.

The Herons finished with a 27-2 advantage in shots and a 12-2 lead in corners. Clarkson goalie Anna Demasi played all 90 minute and made 12 saves, including a couple outstanding leaping saves. Early in the first half she punched a shot by Manning just over the crossbar, and just before the break she denied another Heron shot with a diving save.

William Smith will be back in action tomorrow, Oct. 25, when it hosts Mount Saint Mary for a non-league game at 3 p.m.
