Game Recap: William Smith Soccer | | Paige Mullin

#6 Herons log 6th straight win, top Skidmore 3-0

GENEVA, N.Y.—The No. 6 William Smith soccer team cruised to its sixth straight victory earning a 3-0 win over visiting Skidmore in a Liberty League match played on Cozzens Field this afternoon. It's also the Herons' sixth straight shutout and seventh of the season.

On a day when the Herons celebrated Head Coach Aliceann Wilber and the William Smith soccer program's 500th victory pregame, the Herons improved their record to 7-1-1 overall and 3-0-0 in Liberty League play. The Thoroughbreds fall to 4-5-0 this year and 2-2-0 in conference play.

In the 29th minute, sophomore Evie Manning scored what proved to be the game-winning goal. She collected a pass from junior Kara Shue and placed her shot into the back of the goal. It was Manning's second goal of the year. In the 51st minute, Lauren Randaccio added her third goal of the weekend to make it 2-0. After a Heron corner, junior Brie Ruane headed the ball towards Randaccio, who settled it and tapped her shot over the goal line. Senior Krista Longo registered the final goal of the game in the 72nd minute. She carried the ball into the offensive zone and drilled her shot from just inside the box into the back of the net. It was her second goal of the season.

The Thoroughbreds best scoring chance of the game came about three minutes into the second half. The Herons were whistled for a foul deep in the box. Emily Saliterman played the kick and the ball came to Shelby Hanlon who got off a shot that was immediately blocked and cleared out by the William Smith defense.

Heron first-year goalie Kaileen Murray started the game and played the opening 78:38. First-year Veronica Romines played the final 11:22. Neither Heron goalie faced a shot thanks to the stifling William Smith defense. Deirdre Walsh started in goal for Skidmore and made eight saves in 66:10. Alyssa Rollins came in for the final 23:50 and made three saves.

The Herons finished with a 29-3 advantage in shots and a 7-0 lead in corners.

William Smith will be back in action on Thursday, Oct. 8, when it hosts Alfred for a non-league game on Boswell Field at 7:30 p.m.
