Statesmen down Manhattanville 6-1 in home opener

GENEVA, N.Y.--The Hobart College hockey team used a three-goal second period to down visiting Manhattanville 6-1 in its home opener and first ECAC West game of the season. The Statesmen are now 1-1-1 overall.
 
The Valiants (2-1-0, 0-1-0 ECAC West) suffered their first loss of the year. Senior Mac Olson led Hobart with two goals, junior Ben Gamache earned two assists, and first-year Trevor Poirier added a goal and an assist. Senior Lino Chimienti finished with 28 saves in goal for the Statesmen.
 
Manhattanville scored first just 4:22 into the game. Adam Platt dished to Jeff Beck on his left, who found the back of the net. Anthony Ragone also earned an assist on the play. Midway through the opening period, Poirier evened the score for Hobart. Senior Sean Rudy won a faceoff for the Statesmen and the puck went immediately to Poirier who blasted his shot past the Valiant goaltender. It was his first collegiate goal.
 
The Statesmen took control of the game in the second period. Just 42 seconds into the period, junior Bobby Sokol stole the puck from the Valiants at Hobart's blue line and passed to sophomore Tyler Wolf, who lifted his shot into the top right corner. At 11:33, Olson notched his first goal of the night. In a flurry of action in front of the goal, Poirier put a shot on goal that was saved, but the rebound bounced to Olson who was able to finish it off. With 4:55 left in the period, sophomore Vincent Russo made it 4-1. Sophomore Jordan Haskell carried the puck into the offensive zone and left it for Russo, who was trailing him. Russo buried his shot from the slot for his first goal as a Statesman.
 
Hobart added two more goals in the third period. With 2:33 left in the game, Gamache stole the puck the at the defensive blue line and sent a quick pass to senior Brad Robbins, who capitalized on his one-on-one with the goalie to make it 5-1. Olson added his second goal of the game, a shorthanded tally, with 1:23 on the clock. His goal also came off an assist from Gamache and a breakaway for a one-on-one with the goaltender.  
 
The Statesmen finished with a 37-33 advantage in shots. Hobart was 0-for-3 on the power play, while the Valiants went 0-for-4. Kurt Williams played the first two periods in goal for Manhattanville and made 22 saves. Kyle Redmond came in for the final period and recorded nine stops.
 
The Statesmen will be back in action tomorrow, Nov. 7, when they host Neumann for another ECAC West contest in The Cooler at 4 p.m.
