Brockport slips past Hobart 82-81 in Wendy’s finale

PITTSFORD, N.Y.—The College at Brockport defeated Hobart College in the fifth place game of the 50th and final Wendy's College Classic in Manning and Napier Gym this afternoon. The Statesmen were undone by 18 turnovers, including 12 in the second half, that the Golden Eagles converted into 22 points.

Hobart never trailed in the first half, leading by as many as 13 before taking a 40-35 lead into halftime. Junior Thomas Campion led the Statesmen's fast start, scoring eight of his season-high 12 points in the first eight minutes. Hobart made nine of its first 13 field goal attempts as it built a 24-11 lead. Brockport narrowed the gap to five with a 13-5 run over the next six minutes.

Campion led all scorers at the intermission with 10 points.

After Hobart committed just six first half turnovers, Brockport turned up the defensive pressure. By the midway point of the second half, the Golden Eagles had already forced six Statesmen turnovers, taking their first lead of the game on an 11-0 run that included five points from Hamed Shamseldin, who had 17 points in the second half and finished with a game-high 22.

While Brockport was scoring 11 straight points, Hobart missed three shots in a row and committed a pair of turnovers, falling behind 57-52 with 10:18 remaining. The Statesmen were able to get within 1 five times down the stretch, but never reclaimed the lead.

Hobart, which nearly rallied from a nine-point deficit with just a minute remaining against Division II Roberts Weselyan on Wednesday, finished the Brockport game in a similar fashion. A Matthew Smith (16 pts) layup with 18 seconds left       gave the Golden Eagles an 81-73 lead.

Sophomore Luke Ruddy made a 3-pointer for Hobart to make it a 5-point game and first-year Jamal Lucas (20 pts, 8 rebs) followed with a pair of made free throws to cut it to 3 with four seconds left. The Statesmen immediately fouled and Smith made 1-of-2 free throws. The one make proved to be the difference in the game as junior Pete Drescher drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer for Hobart. He finished the game with 12 points, five rebounds and a season-high five assists.

Dougherty also reached double digits for Hobart, producing 10 points. The Statesmen made 13 3-pointers to the Golden Eagles five and Hobart sank more free throws than Brockport attempted (22-19).

Hobart (4-3) will wrap up the 2015 portion of its scheduled on Thursday, Dec. 10, when the Statesmen travel to Clinton, to take on Hamilton in a non-conference showdown at 7 p.m.
