Heron tennis tripped up by RPI

GENEVA, N.Y. – The William Smith College tennis team fell 6-3 to Rensselaer in a match held in Bristol Field House this afternoon. With the win, the Engineers improve to 7-5 on the season while the Herons fall to 4-6.

RPI held a 3-0 lead at the conclusion of doubles play. The William Smith team of sophomore Hannah More and senior Haley Wolf dropped a tightly contested match, 9-7, at No. 1. In the No. 3 spot, first-year Alex Cattie and sophomore Annie Venditti were also edged 9-7.

The Herons collected singles victories at Nos. 2, 3, and 5 but could not complete the comeback as the Engineers were able to collect the two singles victories they needed to clinch the match. Wolf cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No.2 singles defeating Emily Laurillard. At No. 3, First-year Michaelann Denton notched her ninth straight win, 6-0, 6-3. Venditti needed three sets to prevail at No. 5. She dropped the first set 3-6 but rallied to take the second and third sets, 6-4, 6-3.

William Smith returns to action tomorrow morning when they host St. Lawrence at the HWS Tennis Center. The match is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
