Game Recap: William Smith Soccer | | Paige Mullin

#10 Herons edged by #18 Wheaton (Ill.) in 2OT

The No. 18 Wheaton (Ill.) women's soccer team scored in the 105th minute to secure a 2-1 double overtime victory over No. 10 William Smith College in the Bob Baptista Invitational this evening in Wheaton, Ill. It was the season opener for William Smith, while the Thunder improve to 2-0.

Wheaton struck first on a header goal from seven yards out by Morgan Whitman just 12:52 into the match. Mary Pettit earned the assist on the play. It wasn't until the 76th minute that junior Brie Ruane was able to tie things up for William Smith. Her goal came from the left side off a feed from sophomore Kate Spiegel. Neither team could net the game-winner through the rest of regulation and the first overtime period. The Herons held a 5-0 advantage in shots in the first overtime, however, 4:04 into the second overtime, Krsitin Rauh slid her shot from about three yards out just out of reach of Heron first-year keeper Veronica Romines.

William Smith finished with a 27-9 advantage in shots and a 13-1 lead in corners. Romines finished with three saves in goal for the Herons. Abbey Fuser made 14 saves in net for the Thunder.

The Herons will be back in action tomorrow, Sept. 5, when they take on Emory in their second game of the Bob Baptista Invitational at 11:30 a.m. CT.
