Hot-shooting Statesmen snap skid with 80-69 win over Saints

CANTON, N.Y.—The Hobart College basketball team used 15 3-pointers to stop a five-game slide, topping St. Lawrence University 80-69 in Burkman Gym. Matt Walsh, Pete Drescher, and Jamal Lucas shared game-high honors with 15 points apiece for the Statesmen.

Walsh was a perfect 5-for-5 from beyond the arc before fouling out with 2:08 remaining in the game. Drescher was nearly as hot from long range, finishing 5-of-7. Lucas did most of his damage at the free throw line, making 8-of-10. He also doled out a season and game-high six assists. Colin Dougherty chipped in 14 points (2-3 3FG).

Hobart was 15-of-30 from behind the 3-point line while making just 6-of-20 inside the arc. The Statesmen were 23-of-33 at the free throw line (70%) and recorded 12 steals, their second highest total of the season.

The Saints also had four players reach double digits, led by Kyle Kobis' 13 points. SLU shot 40 percent from the floor, 42 percent from 3-point range (10-24), and 68 percent from the line (13-19).

Hobart opened the game on a 23-9 run, making six 3-pointers in the first nine minutes of the game. St. Lawrence used a late rally to go into halftime trailing 42-37.

The Saints scored the first six points of the second half to take a 43-42 lead, but the Statesmen answered the threat with 19 consecutive points. Walsh, Drescher (twice), Lucas, and Sean McKinless hit 3-pointers during the surge. SLU again rallied, getting 7 points from Kobis during a 23-10 run that closed the gap to 5. Hobart again quelled the threat, this time at the free throw line, making 9-of-12 in the final 72 seconds.

The Statesmen (5-7, 1-2) will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 16, when they take on Clarkson in Potsdam at 4 p.m.
