Walsh nets 19 as Statesmen top Knights

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Matt Walsh scored a career-high 19 points and the Hobart College defense harassed Clarkson University into its worst shooting performance of the season as the Statesmen scored a 59-51 Liberty League victory in Alumni Gymnasium this afternoon.

Coming off a 5-for-5 3-point shooting night at St. Lawrence yesterday, Walsh was 8-of-12 from the floor, including 3-of-6 from beyond the 3-point arc. He was the only player in the contest to reach double digits in the scoring column. Colin Dougherty and Thomas Campion added 7 points apiece. The latter enjoyed a perfect shooting day, making both of his field goal attempts and both of his free throws.

Hobart (6-7, 2-2) shot 52 percent from the floor in the first half, making 5-of-12 3-point tries. The Statesmen finished the day shooting 44 percent with eight 3-pointers made.

Felix Abongo and Conrad Zampier each scored 9 points to lead the Golden Knights. Clarkson (7-9, 4-3) shot a season-low 29.7 percent from the floor, including a mere 21.9 percent in the first half.

CU had a 40-38 rebounding edge, but Hobart's Luke Ruddy grabbed a game-high nine boards.

The Statesmen took control of the game early, using 15 unanswered points to build an 18-7 lead midway through the opening half. The Knights broke up the run with a 3 and a layup in succession, but Hobart closed the half on a 15-6 run to go into the break with a 33-18 lead.

In the middle of the second half, Clarkson used an 8-2 run to trim the Statesmen lead to 45-37. Hobart quashed the Knights' comeback hopes with 9 straight points to give the Statesmen a 54-37 lead with less than four minutes remaining.

CU fought back with a 14-3 run against the Hobart reserves, closing the gap to 57-51 with six seconds left, but Kenan Williams caught a long outlet pass from Walsh for an uncontested layup to complete the day's scoring.

Hobart will return to Bristol Gym for the first time since Dec. 2, 2015, hosting RIT on Tuesday, Jan. 19 at 8 p.m.
