Game Recap: Hobart Basketball | | Ken DeBolt

Shooting slump costs Statesmen against Tigers

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Rochester Institute of Technology took advantage of Hobart College's worst shooting performance of the season, pulling away in the second half for a 75-59 Liberty League men's basketball win in Bristol Gym tonight. The Tigers improve to 8-7 overall, 4-2 in the league, while the Statesmen slip to 6-8, 2-3.

Hobart took a season-high 75 shots in the game, but made just 28 percent, including 24 percent in the second half. The Statesmen began the week in the top 40 in the nation in 3-pointers made per game (9.4) and 3-point percentage (.386), but tonight they made just 4-of-24 from beyond the arc.

Hobart first-year Jamal Lucas scored a game-high 20 points, grabbed eight rebounds and posted five steals. Sophomore Luke Ruddy added his second double-double of the season, notching career-highs of 15 points and 11 rebounds. First-year Colin Dougherty had 8 points and seven boards.

Senior Kamron Davis led RIT with 18 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Sophomores AJ Horde and Mitch Herman produced 12 points apiece. Sophomore Anthony Lewis produced 9 points and eight rebounds off the bench.

Despite its shooting woes, Hobart still managed to build a 6-point lead, going up 25-19 on Justas Valciukas' layup with five minutes left in the opening half. An 8-point surge by RIT, including six from Davis, late in the frame gave the visitors a 33-29 lead. Lucas scored the final 2 points of the half at the line, sending the Statesmen into the break down by 2.

Before the second half was four minutes old, the Tigers seized a double digit lead by scoring nine straight points. Lewis keyed the run with 7 points. Lucas made a pair of free throws to get Hobart within 8, but RIT countered with the next 5 points and maintained a double digit lead for the remainder of the contest.

The Statesmen will continue their three-game homestand on Friday, Jan. 22, when they host Bard at 8 p.m. RIT will return home to host Vassar on Friday at 8 p.m.
