Patterson posts double-double, but Tigers eke out 82-78 win

GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College junior guard Melanie Patterson produced her first career double-double, but Rochester Institute of Technology left Bristol Gym with an 82-78 victory in Liberty League women's basketball action. Patterson logged 15 points and a career-high 11 assists.

Patterson was 5-of-10 from the floor with three 3-pointers. First-year Olivia Hughes enjoyed her best game as a collegian, posting a season-high 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting with four 3-pointers. Sophomore Kendra Quinn-Moultrie added a career-high 15 points for the Herons and junior Gabrielle Eure grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.

Tara Lynch led the Tigers with a game-high 25 points, making 10-of-20 from the floor with two 3-pointers. Jessica Glaz contributed 15 points and Cori Okada chipped in 10 points. Maria Edwards logged a team-high nine assists and Amada Olson finished with eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

William Smith carried a 7-point lead into the second quarter thanks to a 10-3 run to end the opening frame. Patterson scored 5 points during the run.

Early in the second quarter, Patterson sank a 3-pointer to give the Herons their largest lead of the first half, 22-14. A 14-5 run by the Tigers gave them a 28-27 advantage, but William Smith reclaimed the lead with 7 straight points, jumpers by Chase and Eure and a 3-pointer by Hughes. The Herons took a 37-35 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, William Smith ran its lead out to 10 by scoring 11 unanswered points. Eure made baskets to start and end the run. RIT fought back to tie the game at 60, thanks in part to a pair of 3-pointers from Okada. Junior Courtney Chase scored the final bucket of the frame to give William Smith a 62-60 lead with 10 minutes remaining.

The fourth quarter saw the lead see saw back-and-forth. Burns drained a 3-pointer for a 5-point Tiger lead at the 7:28 mark. Three minutes later, junior Alyssa DiCampli hit a triple for a 4-point Heron lead. Sophomore Sarah Brophy tied the game at 78 with a 3-pointer with 40 seconds to go. RIT reclaimed the lead with 16 seconds remaining on a nifty pass through the lane by Okada to Lynch, who finished off her 25 points night with an easy layup.
