TROY, N.Y.—First-year
Mia Morrison produced 22 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, three steals, and two blocks shots to lead the William Smith College basketball team to a 74-73 win at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute this afternoon.
Morrison was 8-of-14 from the floor and 6-of-9 at the line. Junior
Gabrielle Eure also logged a double-double on 13 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Sophomore
Kendra Quinn-Moultrie and junior
Alyssa DiCampli each chipped in 9 points. Junior
Melanie Patterson finished with 8 points, seven rebounds, and six assists.
The Engineers (4-6, 0-1 Liberty League) put five players in double digits, led by Ashley Clough's 16 points. Sam Krumbhaar added 15 points while Elizabeth Eckhardt and LaKissa Martin each scored 11 points. Shaina Iton had 10 points, a team-high 11 rebounds, and three blocked shots.
The game was tied at the end of the first quarter (16-all) and at halftime (37-all) with neither side leading by more than 4 points through the first 20 minutes. RPI had a slight edge in field goal percentage at the half (44.4%-42.9%) but William Smith made more 3-pointers (2-1) and more free throws (5-4). Morrison and Martin shared the scoring lead at halftime with 9 points apiece.
William Smith led by as many as 10 in the third quarter, but RPI came charging back with a 15-4 run. Krumbhaar capped the surge with a 3-pointer for a 59-58 home team lead heading into the final 10 minutes.
The Herons opened the fourth quarter on an 8-3 run to take the lead for good, holding off a determined Engineers' rally. First-year
Olivia Hughes highlighted the run with a traditional 3-point play that put the visitors up 66-62.
RPI got within one three times in the final four minutes, but DiCampli hit a big 3-pointer at the 2:07 mark to quell the first threat. A 3-pointer by Clough with 15 seconds left got her team within one, but Eure made the first of two free throws and Morrison grabbed the offensive rebound off the miss and earned a trip to the line herself. She too made 1-of-2 to give the Herons a 3-point edge. Ellen Boucher's layup at the buzzer provided the final points of the contest.
William Smith finished the contest with a 47-42 rebounding advantage and an 18-11 edge in second chance points. The Herons also controlled the paint, outscoring RPI 38-30.
The Herons (3-6, 1-0) will be back in action on Sunday, Jan. 3 when they visit Skidmore (6-3, 1-0). Tipoff in Saratoga Springs is scheduled for 2 p.m.
