Game Recap: William Smith Soccer | | Paige Mullin Cooke

Herons win 14th straight, defeat Vassar 4-0

GENEVA, N.Y.—The No. 1 William Smith soccer team matched the program record for consecutive wins to start a season, improving to 14-0-0 with a 4-0 victory over Vassar in a Liberty League match played this afternoon on Cozzens Field. The Herons are now 6-0-0 in conference play.

It was the first Liberty League loss for Vassar this season. The Brewers are now 7-6-1 overall and 5-1-0 in the Liberty League. It's William Smith eighth straight shutout and 10th this season. The Herons scored once in the first half and opened up the game with three goals in the second half. Junior Evie Manning led the team with a goal and an assist.

In the 36th minute, sophomore Sarah Olick-Sutphen blasted a shot on goal. Vassar keeper Stephanie Tapolsky made the stop, but the rebound bounced out to sophomore Phoebe Wade who tapped it into the empty left side of the goal. It was Wade's third goal of the weekend and fourth this season.

After a number of near misses for the Herons, Manning made it 2-0 in the 76th minute. Junior Lauren Kogelmann drilled a shot off the left post and the rebound bounced to Manning who sent home her ninth goal of the season. Just under five minutes later, senior Kara Shue carried the ball into the box and sent her shot into the back of the net for team-leading 10th goal of the year. In the 85th minute, senior Brie Ruane collected a short cross in the box from Manning, and sent her shot into the right side of the goal for the final score. It was her fifth goal this year.

Vassar's first shot came in the 57th minute when Amanda McFarland fired a shot from about 30 yards out that went wide of the goal. Shortly after that, the Brewers were awarded a free kick just outside of the box. Kelsey Hamm sent the ball into the box, but it sailed through the traffic in front of the goal and out of bounds.

The Herons finished with a 30-2 advantage in shots and an 8-1 lead in corners. Sophomore Veronica Romines played all 90 minutes in goal and did not face a shot. She earned her fifth shutout of the season. Tapolsky made 11 saves in goal for Vassar.

William Smith will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 22, when it travels to take on Union for another Liberty League match at 3 p.m.
