Game Recap: Hobart Soccer | | Paige Mullin Cooke

Hobart remains undefeated in OT, edges Union 1-0

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College soccer team remained undefeated in overtime as it edged Union College 1-0 in a Liberty League game played tonight on a windy Boswell Field. The Statesmen are now 5-0-3 in games going into overtime this season.

Hobart's last four Liberty League contests have gone into overtime, with the Statesmen winning each of those matches. Hobart is now 8-5-3 overall and 5-1-1 in the Liberty League, while the Dutchmen are now 9-5-1 and 2-3-1 in conference play.

For the second time this season, first-year Nate Cary was credited with the game-winning goal for Hobart.

Cary's goal came 6:38 into the extra period. He blasted a shot that deflected off a Union defender and into the back of the net. It was Cary's third goal this season. Sophomore goalie Alec Kaminer stopped the lone shot he faced to earn his fourth shutout this year.

Neither team could net the game winner through regulation. The Statesmen held a 4-1 advantage in shots in the first half, while Union posted a 2-1 lead in the second half. The Dutchmen had a scoring chance late in the second half. Union was awarded a free kick about five yards outside of the box. Ethan Strauss put a header on goal, but Kaminer stepped up to make the save. The Statesmen earned a corner with 8:28 left in regulation, but a foul in the box took away any chance at a goal.

Hobart finished with an 8-3 lead in shots. Each team earned two corners. John Weitzman played all 96:38 in goal for Union and made five saves.

The Statesmen have one game left in the regular season. Hobart plays at RIT on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 2 p.m. If the Statesmen win at RIT they will capture the Liberty League regular season title.
