GENEVA, N.Y.—The No. 1 William Smith College soccer team scored two goals in the first half and added three more in the second to down Worcester State in an NCAA tournament first round match. The Herons improve to 19-0-0 this season.
The Lancers finished their season with a 9-7-2 overall record. Junior
Theresa Lohr led William Smith with two assists. It was the 13th straight shutout for the Herons and their 15th of the season. William Smith, who is making a record 27th appearance in the NCAA tournament, advances to the tournament second round where it will face the Trinity (Conn.). The Bantams played WPI to a 0-0 double overtime tie and advanced 3-1 on penalty kicks in their first round game.
Sophomore
Megan Richard broke through for the Herons in the 25th minute. Her seventh goal of the season came off an assist from junior
Cailin MacLean. Richard's shot came from the top of the box and went right inside the left post. It was Richard's seventh goal this season. Junior
Lauren Kogelmann made it 2-0. The ball was bouncing around in the box. One of the Lancers tried to clear the ball with a slide tackle, but it went right to Kogelmann who placed her shot from about 20 yards out right into the top left corner of the goal. It was Kogelmann's third goal this year.
Worcester State had a couple chances to get on the board in the first half. Ashleigh Howland tried to capitalize on a misplaced ball. Howland got the ball at the top of the box and took a shot. Heron goalie
Veronica Romines was coming out to play the ball and cleared it away with a kick. The Lancers had another chance when Jenna Matthew played the ball across the field and into the box to Cate Farmer, but Romines came out to snatch up the ball before Farmer could get her shot off.
William Smith added three more goals in the second half to run away with the game. Just three minutes into the second half, senior
Kara Shue extended the Heron lead to 3-0. She carried the ball into the box, getting the edge on her defender and fired from the left side. It was her 12th goal this fall. Just 1:17 later, Lohr sent a short cross from the right side of the box to senior
Brie Ruane. The Lancer goalie came out to play Lohr with the ball, and Ruane was able to tap her shot into the empty side of the goal. It was Ruane's ninth goal this year. In the 62nd minute, senior
Lauren Randaccio registered her eighth goal of the year after a short pass from Lohr.
Romines played 68:18 and stopped the lone shot she faced. First-year
