Herons use 3 2nd half goals to top Bantams 3-0

GENEVA, N.Y.—The No. 1 William Smith College soccer team scored three goals in the second half to defeat Trinity (Conn.) 3-0 in an NCAA tournament second round game played on Cozzens Field this afternoon. The Herons improve to 20-0-0.

William Smith advances to the NCAA tournament third round where it will face Amherst on Saturday, Nov. 19. The site and time of the match is still to be determined. Amherst defeated Swarthmore 4-2 in its second round game this afternoon in Amherst, Mass.

Trinity finished its season with an 11-5-4 overall record. Three different Herons scored in the victory. Senior Bridget Westerman led the way with a goal and an assist. Sophomore goalie Veronica Romines played all 90 minutes. She did not face a shot, but earned her ninth shutout this fall. It was the 14th straight shutout for the Herons and their 16th of the season.

The Herons' best scoring chance of the first half came with 29:20 on the clock. Junior Kate Spiegel blasted a shot on goal that Trinity goalie, Julia Pitino, punched just over the crossbar. Pitino played all 90 minutes and made six saves for the Bantams.

Trinity also had a couple scoring chances in the first half. With 26:30 before the break, Andi Nicholson had a break away for a one-on-one with the Heron goalie, but she sent her shot wide of the right post. With 7:49 left in the first, Kelly Lucas sent a cross into the box to find Taylor Kirchgessner, but her header went wide left.

In the 58th minute, senior Ella McMackin broke through for William Smith. Her third goal of the season came after a corner kick sent in by Westerman. First-year Eileen Rath also earned an assist on the play. Just 50 seconds later, the Herons were awarded a penalty kick after a Trinity foul in the box. Westerman drilled her shot to give the Herons a 3-0 lead.  It was Westerman's first career goal. In the 66th minute, William Smith was given another penalty kick after another Bantam foul in the box. Spiegel fired her shot into the back of the net. It was her first goal this season.

Late in the second half, Trinity was awarded a free kick about 10 yards outside of the box. Sheena Landy took the kick, but the ball was immediately cleared out by the Heron defense.

William Smith finished with a 17-3 advantage in shots and a 6-3 lead in corners.
