Game Recap: William Smith Soccer | | Paige Mullin Cooke

#1 Herons battle back for 4-2 win over #13 Amherst

WALTHAM, MASS.—The No. 1 William Smith College soccer team rallied with two second half goals to take down No. 13 Amherst 4-2 in an NCAA tournament third round game played at Brandeis' Gordon Field. The Herons improve to 21-0-0.

Senior Kara Shue led William Smith with two assists. With her 15 assists this fall, Shue set a new William Smith record for assists in a season. The Herons rallied after falling behind twice in the game. It's the first time William Smith has trailed an opponent all season.

The Herons advance to face No. 23 Brandeis tomorrow, Nov. 20 at 1 p.m. on Gordon Field. The host Judges topped No. 15 McDaniel 1-0 in the other NCAA tournament third round game. Amherst finished its season with a 17-2-1 overall record.

The game started off with each team recording an own goal just over five minutes apart. In the 25th minute, after a Purple and White free kick from about 15 yards outside of the box taken by Erin McClave, the ball went off a Heron and trickled into the back of the goal. It ended the Herons' shutout streak at 14 matches. In the 30th minute, it was Amherst's turn to record an own goal. A cross by sophomore Megan Richard went off an Amherst defender and out of reach of the Purple and White's goalie Chelsea Cutler.

Just over a minute later, Amherst took back the lead when Hannah Guzzi took a shot from the right side of the box and placed it inside the far post. Ashlyn Heller earned an assist on the play. It was Guzzi's 19th goal this year.

With 6:09 left in the first half, Callahan tied the game up for William Smith. Junior Theresa Lohr sent in a Heron corner kick and Richard headed the ball to Callahan, who tapped her shot over the goal line. It was her third goal this season.

In the 58th minute, Shue pushed a pass from the left side to find senior Brie Ruane. Ruane touched the ball around her defender and sent her shot into the back of the goal. It was her 10th tally this year. One minute later, Shue set up junior Evie Manning in a similar fashion. She sent her cross from the left side to find Manning wide open to drill her shot from just inside the box. It was Manning's 11th goal this year.

In the 67th minute, the Herons were awarded a penalty kick after an Amherst whistle in the box, but William Smith missed on the attempt. The Purple and White had a chance late in the game to get within one, but senior defender Bridget Westerman denied the chance, blocking back-to-back shots and clearing the ball out of the box with 9:06 remaining.

The Herons finished with a 14-12 advantage in shots. The Purple and White had a 6-4 edge in corners.

Sophomore goalie Veronica Romines played all 90 minutes in goal for William Smith and made four saves. Cutler finished with five saves in goal for Amherst.
