Herons slay Dragons in Cortaca Classic

CORTLAND, N.Y.—The William Smith College basketball team shot 54 percent from the floor and put five players in double figures in an 82-54 win at SUNY Cortland tonight. Senior forward Gabrielle Eure led the Herons with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
 
Eure was 7-of-12 shooting from the field and 1-of-2 at the free throw line. Senior guard Alyssa DiCampli had 13 points on 4-of-5 shooting, including 3-for-3 from beyond the 3-point arc, and 2-for-2 at the line. She also dished out a team-high four assists. Sophomore forward Mia Morrison also contributed 13 points, making 6-of-8 from the floor and 1-of-2 at the line. Senior guard Melanie Patterson chipped in 12 points and sophomore Natalia Baum had 11 points to go with a game-high four steals.
 
William Smith (1-1) dominated the glass, outrebounding the Red Dragons 49-25. The Herons committed six more turnovers than Cortland, but still managed a 25-13 advantage in points off turnovers. William Smith also showed off its depth, as the Heron bench outscored the Red Dragon reserves 35-11.
 
The first two minutes of the game saw the teams trade baskets to a 4-all tie, but the rest of the first quarter belonged to the Herons. William Smith outscored its host 15-2 over the next eight minutes to build a 19-6 lead they would not relinquish. Eure recorded 9 points in the opening 10 minutes.
 
The Herons led by as many 26 in the second quarter before carrying a 48-23 lead into halftime. William Smith shot 70 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, connecting on 21-of-30 from the floor, while holding Cortland to 29 percent shooting.
 
The Herons led by at least 20 and as many as 33 points in the second half.
 
William Smith will face Ithaca on Day 2 of the Cortaca Classic in the Bombers' Ben Light Gymnasium. Tipoff on Saturday is set for 3 p.m.
