ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Hobart College squash team finished the 2016 Navy Round Robin with a 2-2 overall record. The Statesmen defeated Denison 6-3 and Stanford 7-2 to improve to 2-3 on the season.
Hobart opened the tournament on Saturday against Navy. The Midshipmen defeated the Statesmen 9-0. At No. 4, junior
Terrance Rose battled Navy's Will Walker but fell in five games, 11-8, 9-11, 12-10, 5-11, 11-8. Sophomore

Jack Shannon each won their first games but fell in four games. Oakley played in the top spot and Shannon played at No. 3. Hobart took on Massachusetts Institute of Technology Saturday evening. The Engineers emerged victorious 8-1. Oakley collected the lone point of the match for the Statesmen with an 11-6, 12-10, 11-6 win over MIT's Justin Restivo. The win was Oakley's first of the season. Graham Henderson pushed his match to five games but fell to Bowen Baker 11-13, 6-11, 11-4, 11-9, 13-11.
This morning, Hobart collected its first win of the season, defeating Denison. The Statesmen won all six of their matches by the score of 3-0. Shannon defeated Alvaro Magana 11-4, 11-7, 12-10 at No. 3 while Rose bested Aariel Cohen 11-1, 11-8, 11-7 at No. 4. Henderson and fellow first-year
Cristian Escalona collected their first collegiate wins, beating Fernando Magana and Graham Poole at Nos. 5 and 7, respectively. Junior
Matthew Frantz won 11-6, 11-2, 11-4, at No. 8 and
Ben Shapiro knocked off Daraius Sumariwalla 1-7, 11-1, 11-7 at No. 9. Hobart's win over Denison was the 50th of Head Coach
Tim Riskie's career.
The Statesmen rounded out the tournament with a 7-2 win over the Cardinal. In the top spot, Oakley collected his second win of the tournament, besting Yousef Hindy, 7-11, 11-7, 11-6, 11-5. Shannon, Henderson, and Frantz won 3-1 at Nos. 3, 4, and 8, respectively. Rose and Escalona won their matches against Stanford 3-2. Rose rallied from a 2-1 deficit to beat Raghav Mehrota, 7-11, 14-12, 6-11, 11-3, 11-7. Escalona dug himself out of a 0-2 hole to defeat Juan Sarmiento, 9-11, 2-11, 15-13, 11-8, 11-9. Senior
Felipe Pantle won his match in the second spot by default.
Hobart will close out the 2016 portion of its schedule on Dec. 3, when it travels to Williams College. The match with the Ephs is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
