GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College basketball team kept the high-scoring College at Brockport offense under wraps in in Bristol Gym tonight. The Golden Eagles came into the game averaging 86.2 points per game, but were held to a season-low 52 in a 13-point loss to the Statesmen.
First-year guard
Tucker Lescoe led all scorers with 16 points for Hobart. He was 5-of-9 shooting from the field with a pair of 3-pointers, and went 4-of-6 at the free throw line. Sophomore forward
Matt Walsh joined him in double figures with 11 points off the bench. He was 4-of-6 from the field, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc.
Hobart (4-2) used a balanced effort on the glass to score a 41-30 rebounding advantage. Junior forward
Luke Ruddy and sophomore guard
Colin Dougherty both logged seven rebounds for the Statesmen.
Brockport (6-1) had just one player in double figures. Junior guard Hamed Shamseldin finished with 12 points.
The Golden Eagles led for most of the first half, pressuring the Statesmen in 12 turnovers before halftime. Brockport scored six straight points in the middle of the frame to build their largest lead of the game, 13-5. Junior guard Abdoulaye Sow scored four of his nine points during the run.
Hobart chipped away at the deficit and claimed its first lead of the night on a 3-pointer by Walsh two minutes before the half. Senior guard
Pete Drescher added a jumper about 30 seconds later and senior guard
Thomas Campion made 1-of-2 at the line to send the Statesmen into halftime with a 23-19 lead.
Lescoe sandwiched a pair of 3-pointers around a layup by sophomore guard
Jamal Lucas in the opening four minutes of the second half, while Brockport went scoreless until senior forward Marcus Blythers connected 3:35 in. Brockport closed to within seven twice over the next five minutes, but Hobart scored seven consecutive points in the middle of the stanza to push its lead into double digits for good.
The Statesmen shot 49 percent from the floor, 33.3 percent from beyond the arc, and 61.5 percent at the free throw line. The Golden Eagles were held to a season-low 31.1 percent shooting, a season-low 21.1 percent from deep, and 52.6 percent at the line.
Brockport, which was receiving votes in this week's D3hoops.com poll, will be back in action on Friday, Dec. 9, when it visits Potsdam for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff. Hobart will play its final game before final exams on Saturday, Dec. 10, hosting Ithaca at 2 p.m.
