GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College basketball team never led in regulation, but got twin 24-point performances from first-years
Colin Dougherty and
Jamal Lucas in a 72-67 overtime victory against Clarkson University in Bristol Gym tonight.
Dougherty was 9-of-17 shooting and 6-of-10 at the free throw line as he matched his season-high for points. Lucas was 7-of-15 shooting with a pair of 3-pointers and 8-of-11 at the free throw line, finishing the game 1 point shy of his career-high. Lucas shared game-high honors with nine rebounds. Junior
Thomas Campion added a season-high 13 points, including three 3-pointers, off the bench.
Senior Felix Abongo led the Golden Knights with 16 points, nine rebounds, and four assists. Junior Derek Hart had 13 points and two blocked shots and first-year Malaquais Canery chipped in 10 points.
Both teams pulled down 37 rebounds, but Hobart made four fewer turnovers (11-15) and made the most of Clarkson's miscues, holding a 19-9 advantage in points off turnovers.
The Golden Knights started the game on a 9-0 run and led by as many as 14 in the opening 20 minutes, but the Statesmen used a 15-4 run to close the half down by just 3, 28-25. Abongo led all scorers with 10 at the break.
Lucas made the opening basket of the second half to pull Hobart within 1, but Clarkson countered with a 13-4 run that pushed its lead back into double digits with 14 minutes remaining in regulation. The Statesmen never let the Knights get more than 11 points ahead, but couldn't get closer than 6 over the next 12 minutes.
With about 2:30 remaining, CU first-year Liam Ellis made a shot from the corner with his foot on the 3-point line for a 54-45 lead. Hobart raced down the floor and Dougherty attacked the rim, drawing a foul. He made both shots to make it a 7-point game. Campion converted a layup under with two minutes to go to make it 54-49.
Hobart forced Clarkson into a shot clock violation, but misfired on the offensive end. Hobart fouled to give the Knights a 1-and-1, but Ellis' missed the front end and Lucas secured the rebound. Dougherty converted a traditional 3-point play with 39 seconds remaining and then the Statesmen got another defensive stop thanks to a steal by sophomore
Luke Ruddy. Lucas raced to the rim and got a layup to tie the game with 3.4 seconds remaining.
Clarkson got off a heave from half court that was not online, sending the game into overtime.
In the extra session, Hobart never trailed, although CU did tie the game twice. The Knights drew even for the final time at the 1:50 mark when senior Jeremy Liss made the second of two free throws. Lucas made the game's next 4 points and the Statesmen made 7-of-8 free throws in the final 30 seconds to secure the win and keep their playoff hopes alive.
Hobart (10-12, 6-7) is one game behind RIT and Vassar, which are tied for the fourth and final spot in the league's postseason tournament. The Statesmen will host league co-leader St. Lawrence (12-9, 8-5) at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 13. Clarkson (8-14, 5-8) will travel to RIT (11-11, 7-6) tomorrow.
