William Smith soars past Dutchwomen 7-2, clinches Liberty League berth

GENEVA, N.Y.-The William Smith College tennis team entered today's match against Union looking to clinch the fourth and final spot in the Liberty League Tournament. The Herons controlled their own destiny, needing a win in the regular season finale to clinch a spot in the four-team field. William Smith secured its postseason berth with a 7-2 win over the Dutchwomen this afternoon.
 
The Herons, who conclude their regular season with an 11-7 overall record and a 4-3 record in conference, secured the fourth and final spot in the 2016 Liberty League Women's Tennis Tournament with today's win. William Smith will be joined in the tournament by St. Lawrence, Vassar, and Skidmore who all finished the season at 6-1 conference play. The Saints earned the No. 1 seed thanks to the best winning percentage vs. all opponents with an end-of-season record of .500 or above. The Brewers claimed the second seed thanks to its head-to-head win over the Thoroughbreds.
 
The Herons jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to a sweep of doubles play. Junior Katarina Kostovic and first-year Alex Greenberg started the match fast for William Smith knocking off Hayley Lough and Paige Webster 8-0 at No. 2. The win was their fourth straight and brings their record to 9-3 this spring. In the top spot, junior Hannah More and sophomore Michaelann Denton collected their 12th win of the season after defeating Mina Hsia and Natalia Pronchick 8-5. Sophomore Alex Cattie and first-year Sydney Ferry posted an 8-3 win in the No. 3 spot.
 
At No. 2 singles, Greenberg improved to 14-9 overall in her rookie season with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Hsia. More clinched the overall match for the Herons with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Pronchick. The win improves More's record to a perfect 7-0 in conference play and 15-2 in the top spot. Denton collected her fifth straight win defeating Lough 6-2, 7-5 at No. 3. Ferry collected William Smith's final point at No. 5 singles, defeating Paige Webster 7-5. Ferry and Webster were high school teammates at Andover High School.
 
The Herons will begin their quest for a Liberty League Title on Saturday, May 7 against St. Lawrence. The match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. at Cornell University's Reis Tennis Center. On April 10, the Saints defeated William Smith 7-2 in Canton, N.Y.
