Statesmen tripped up by St. John Fisher in home opener

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College soccer team was tripped up by St. John Fisher in its home opener, losing by a score of 3-1. The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead early in the first and kept control from there.

Tyler Randall put St. John Fisher (1-2-0) on the board in the 14th minute bouncing a shot over Hobart junior keeper Morgan Sawyer.

The Statesmen's best scoring chance of the first half came just over 10 minutes in. Junior Zach Poretz tried to set up sophomore Derrick Acheampong, however, as Acheampong went up for the header the Cardinals' goalie grabbed the ball out of the air.

Jeff Meyers extended the St. John Fisher lead to 2-0 in the 79th minute. Thomas Goetze fired a shot on goal that was stopped by Sawyer, but he wasn't able to hang on to the ball. Meyers collected the rebound and found the back of the net with his shot. Just 32 seconds later, Poretz put Hobart on the board. He placed his shot just under the crossbar to make it 2-1. However, Meyers struck again in the 89th minute. He took a cross from the right side from Glenn Roschetzky and carried the ball towards the box. Sawyer was rushing out to play the ball, but Meyers got passed him and scored in an empty net.

With 20:47 remaining, junior Nick Dosky came inches away from scoring for the Statesmen, blasting a shot off the crossbar. With just 2:53 left Hobart had another opportunity. Sophomore Sam Farman sent a pass to find senior TJ Kaszubski out in front, but he drilled his shot just high over the crossbar.

Sawyer finished with one save for Hobart. Joe Catalfamo made five stops in goal for St. John Fisher. The Statesmen held a 19-7 advantage in shots and a 6-2 lead in corners.

Hobart (0-2-1) will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 10, when it travels to take on the University of Rochester in another non-league game at 7 p.m.
