GENESEO, N.Y.-The sixth-ranked William Smith College field hockey team spoiled Geneseo's home opener knocking off the Knights 3-1 in non-conference action this evening. The Herons spread the offense around with three different players notching goals.
Â
William Smith (2-1) quickly put Saturday's loss in the rearview mirror scoring just 23 seconds into the game. Senior
Austen Gillen-Keeney carried the ball down the right side of the field and sent a cross cage pass to classmate
Alessandra Patrizio. Patrizio knocked down the bouncing ball and fired the shot past Geneseo goalie, Nicole Gregg. The goal was Patrizio's team-leading fourth of the season and came on the game's first shot. She is now three points away from reaching 100 career points.
Â
The Herons continued to apply pressure in their offensive half of the field, doubling the lead in the 15th minute. Junior
Maura Moran collected a loose ball at the top of the 16-yard arc and set up with her back to the goal. She fanned on the initial shot attempt, regrouped, and sent a low scorching shot past Gregg.Â
Â
The Knights gained momentum in the final 10 minutes of the half but were unable to solve William Smith goalie
Biz Chirco. Geneseo's best chances in the half came off the stick of Giovanna Fasanello, who had one shot ricochet off the post, another blocked by a Heron defender, and a third stoned by Chirco.
Â
Both teams were issued yellow cards in the first half but neither offense could capitalize on the extra player situation.
Â
William Smith capitalized on its fourth penalty corner of the game when junior
Alexandra Frary tallied her second goal of the season. She slalomed her way through the Knights defense and fired a shot into the back of the cage. Â
Â
Geneseo (0-3) cracked the scoreboard in the 66th minute when Maria Dillingham deposited a shot behind Chirco. Fasanello was credited with an assist on the goal.
Â
Chirco started and played all 70 minutes in goal for the Herons, collecting three saves. On the other end of the field, Gregg made nine stops in 70 minutes.
Â
William Smith controlled the stat sheet outshooting the Knights 20-8, while earning 13 penalty corners to Geneseo's five.
Â
The Herons return to McCooey Field on Saturday when they host Oneonta. The non-conference contest is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
