GENEVA, N.Y.—The No. 9/10 Hobart College hockey team downed the University of New England 5-1 in a non-league game played this afternoon in The Cooler. The Statesmen took control of the game scoring four unanswered goals to close out the second and third periods.
Hobart is now 9-2-3 overall, while the Nor'easters fall to 7-6-1. Sophomore
Jonas Toupal recorded a goal and an assist for the Statesmen, while junior
Andrew Silard and sophomore
Cam Shaheen notched two assists each. First-year goaltender Andrew Connal made 19 saves to remain undefeated with a 6-0-2 record in goal this year.
Just 2:58 into the game, the Statesmen were awarded a penalty shot, however, the attempt was denied by the Nor'easters' goaltender. With 6:10 left in the opening period, senior
Bo Webster scored through a flurry of action in front of the net. It was his fourth goal this season, and came off assists from Toupal and junior
Vincent Russo.
Just 6:51 into the second, Ryan Bloom tied things up at 1-1 with a power-play tally for UNE. After passes from Danny Antonoff and Brady Fleurent, Bloom lifted his shot off the crossbar and into the goal. The Statesmen responded with a power-play goal of their own 10:45 in, taking advantage of a 5-on-3. Tanner Shaw. With 3:07 left in the second, junior
Ben Greiner extended the Hobart lead to two with his fourth goal of the year. He pushed a shot in from right in front. Shaheen and Silard were credited with the assists.
Sophomore
Jack Macnee logged his first collegiate goal 2:51 into the third period. His goal from the blue line came off assists from Shaheen and Silard and gave Hobart a 4-1 lead. With 4:55 left in the game, senior
Nick Bingaman added an empty net goal for the Statesmen. He now leads Hobart with 11 goals this season.
The Statesmen finished with a 45-20 lead in shots. Hobart went 1-for-7 on the power play, while the Nor'easters finished 1-for-4. UNE's goalie Tate Sproxton made 40 saves in 58:08.
The Statesmen will be back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 17, when they travel to take on Brockport in a non-league game at 7 p.m.
