Statesmen pick up 5-2 win at Brockport

Senior Nick Bingaman recorded a goal and two assists to lead the No. 9/10 Hobart College hockey team to a 5-2 win in a non-league game at Brockport tonight. Five different Statesmen scored in the victory.
 
Hobart extended its unbeaten streak to seven games and is now 10-2-3 overall. The Golden Eagles fall to 6-9-1 this season. First-year Lawson MacDougall and sophomore Tanner Shaw each added a goal and an assist for the Statesmen. Junior Frank Oplinger played all 60 minutes in goal for Hobart and made 25 saves.
 
Just 3:38 into the game, Bingaman put Hobart on the scoreboard. Just under five minutes later, MacDougall notched a shorthanded tally after a pass from Bingaman to make it 2-0. With just four seconds left in the opening period, Brian Hurlimann put the Golden Eagles on the board after a feed from Connor Hutchins.
 
At 9:24 into the second, Jake Taylor tied up the game for Brockport. Rob Hall earned the assist. However, the Statesmen closed out the game with three straight goals to secure the win. Just 26 seconds after Brockport's game-tying goal, junior Vincent Russo took back the lead for Hobart. Bingaman and MacDougall were credited with the assists. Shaw added a power-play goal with just over three minutes left in the second period to make it 4-2. Sophomore Jonas Toupal and first-year Julien Denicourt set up the play. Sophomore Brandon Bistodeau registered the final goal of the game at 10:06 in the third. Shaw earned the assist.
 
The Statesmen finished with a 40-27 advantage in shots. Hobart went 1-for-5 on the power play and killed all four of the Golden Eagles power-play attempts. Matt Schneider made 35 saves in goal for Brockport.
 
Hobart will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 21, when it plays a non-conference game with Elmira in Skaneateles, N.Y., at 7 p.m.
