POTSDAM, N.Y.—The Hobart College basketball team used a 14-2 first half run to propel it to a 73-55 win at Clarkson University tonight. Sophomore
Jamal Lucas and first-year
Tucker Lescoe scored 18 points apiece to power the Statesmen.
Lucas was 9-of-17 shooting, while Lescoe was 6-of-12 with a pair of 3-pointers. Hobart (9-6, 4-2 Liberty League) also got double digit efforts from sophomores
Matt Walsh (13 pts) and
Colin Dougherty (12). Walsh also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
Clarkson (8-8, 3-4) got a game-high 31 points from Derek Hart. He was 13-of-16 shooting from the field, the rest of the Golden Knights were a combined 7-of-35.
The Statesmen charged out of the gate, scoring the first seven points of the game, but the Golden Knights answered right back with eight straight points. With the game tied at 20 with about seven minutes remaining in the first half, Hobart commenced its decisive run. Lucas made a pair of layups to key an 8-0 run. Hart interrupted a streak with a layup of his own, but then the Statesmen came right back with six consecutive points, including four from Lescoe.
The Statesmen led 36-26 at halftime.
In the second half, Clarkson was able to close the gap to seven near the 10-minute mark, but Hobart outscored the Knights 23-12 down the stretch to secure the win.
The Statesmen shot 44 percent from the field compared to 39 percent for CU. Hobart went 13-of-14 at the free throw line, while the Knights were just 11-of-19. The Statesmen also took care of the ball, committing just five turnovers while Clarkson made 14.
Hobart will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 21, when the Statesmen visit St. Lawrence University. Tipoff in Canton is scheduled for 4 p.m.
