Statesmen hold off #4 Geneseo for 3-2 win

The #6/7 Hobart College hockey team scored three goals in the first period and held off #4 Geneseo for a 3-2 victory in a non-league game played tonight in Geneseo, N.Y. The Statesmen extended their unbeaten streak to nine games.
 
Hobart is now 12-2-3 overall and the Knights fall to 12-3-3 this season. Senior Bobby Sokol led the Statesmen with two goals. Senior Nick Bingaman and sophomore Tanner Shaw each added two assists. Junior Frank Oplinger played 59:45 in goal and made 38 saves.
 
Just nine seconds into the game, Sokol found the back of the net to give Hobart a 1-0 lead. Junior Tyler Wolf and Bingaman set up the play on the very first shift. At 12:22 sophomore Brandon Bistodeau notched his fourth goal of the year after passes from Shaw and junior Vincent Russo. Just under five minutes later, Sokol struck again to stretch Hobart's lead to 3-0. His second goal of the day came off assists from Shaw and Bingaman. Sokol has registered nine goals this season.
 
The Knights logged the lone goal of the second period. Connor Anthoine scored 5:01 in. Conlon Keenan and David Szmyd were credited with the assists.
 
Trevor Hills cut the Geneseo deficit to one 7:09 into the third period, pushing the puck in from right in front. Jack Ceglarski and Stephen Collins earned the assists. The Statesmen killed off six minutes of penalties late in the third period, including a 5-on-3 to hold on for the win.
 
Hobart finished 0-for-6 on the power play and killed all four of the Knights' power-play attempts. Devin McDonald played 59:16 in goal for Geneseo and finished with 30 saves. The Knights held a 40-33 advantage in shots.
 
The Statesmen will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 27, when they host Lebanon Valley for an ECAC West game at 7 p.m.
