Game Recap: Hobart Basketball | | Ken DeBolt

Huge 2nd half carries Statesmen past Brewers

GENEVA, N.Y.—After a lackluster first half, the Hobart College basketball team played one of its best second halves of the season, dominating Vassar College in a 92-70 Liberty League victory tonight. Sophomore guard Colin Dougherty led four Statesmen in double figures with 21 points.

Dougherty was 5-of-8 from the floor with a 3-pointer. He also gave the Brewer defenders fits, slashing to the basket and earning 12 trips to the free throw line, making 10. Sophomores Matt Walsh and Jamal Lucas and first-year Tucker Lescoe each chipped in 16 points. All three players put a charge in the Bristol Gym crowd with a spectacular effort from deep, combining for 11 of Hobart's season-high 15 triples. Walsh also brought the Bristol faithful to their feet with a pair of thunderous second half dunks.

Vassar (5-13, 1-8) got a game-high 24 points from junior guard Jesse Browne and sophomore guard Alex Seff chipped in 12 points.

The Brewers controlled the first half, leading by as many as nine, before taking a 34-30 lead into the locker room at the break. Vassar shot 46 percent from the field in the first half while limiting the Statesmen (10-8, 5-4) to 29 percent shooting.

Hobart snapped out of its slumber early in the second half. Lescoe set the tone with a 3-pointer to open the second half scoring. Moments later, the Statesmen scored 12 unanswered points to build a 48-40 lead. Walsh threw down the first of his dunks near the 13-minute mark, giving Hobart its first double digit lead, 53-43. The Statesmen didn't let their lead slip into single digits for the remainder of the contest, leading by as many as 29.

Hobart scorched the nets in the second half, shooting 69 percent from the field, including 9-of-15 from deep. Vassar cooled off only slightly from its first half pace, shooting 44 percent after the break. The Statesmen committed just 10 turnovers while the Brewers committed a season-high 25.

Both teams will be back in action at 4 p.m. on Saturday, January 28. The Statesmen will host Bard (2-15, 0-8), while the Brewers will travel to RIT (11-8, 5-5).
