Hobart wins league opener at Bard

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—Guards Jamal Lucas and Tucker Lescoe combined for 30 points, 10 rebounds, and five steals in Hobart College's 78-64 Liberty League win at Bard College tonight. The Statesmen improved to 6-4 overall (1-0 LL) while the Raptors slip to 2-8 (0-1 LL).
 
Lucas and first-year forward Edens Fleurizard shared team-high honors with six rebounds each. Lescoe was 5-of-9 shooting with four 3-pointers, one more than Bard made as a team. First-year forward Sam Allen and sophomore guard Colin Dougherty contributed 12 and 10 points, respectively. Sophomore forward Matt Walsh added 8 points, five rebounds, and blocked two shots.
 
For the game, Hobart shot 49 percent from the floor, made 11-of-24 3-pointers, and sank 74 percent of its free throws.
 
Emmanuel Oyakhilome and Joel Wincowski paced Bard with 13 points each. Armando Dunn had 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
 
Hobart seized control in the first half, using a 14-4 run to turn a 1-point deficit into a 9-point lead. Lucas accounted for half of the Statesmen's 14 points with Ruddy (4) and Allen (3) chipping in the rest. Hobart scored the final five points of the first half to take a 43-27 lead into halftime.
 
Lucas led all scorers with 9 points at the break. The Statesmen shot 59 percent from the field and went 6-of-10 from behind the 3-point arc in the opening 20 minutes.
 
Bard came out of the break on fire, using a 21-9 run in the first 10 minutes to whittle its deficit down to just four. Oyakhilome keyed the ill-fated comeback with 6 points. Hobart was able to regain its composure and finished the game on a 23-13 run to secure the victory. The Statesmen went 4-of-8 from 3-point land in the closing run, including a pair of triples from Lescoe.
 
Hobart will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 7 when the Statesmen visit Vassar. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
