Dougherty's big 2nd half helps Statesmen stop Brewers

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.—Sophomore guard Colin Dougherty scored 21 second half points to lead Hobart College to an 82-66 Liberty League win at Vassar College this afternoon. Dougherty finished the contest with a career-high 25 points as the Statesmen improved to 7-4 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

Dougherty was 5-of-7 from behind the 3-point arc and 9-of-14 shooting overall. He was joined in double figures by sophomore forward Matt Walsh, first-year forward Sam Allen, and junior forward Luke Ruddy. Walsh scored a season-high 17 points, including a game-high 10 in the first half. He also corralled a game-high six rebounds. Allen netted 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting and recorded a game-high three steals, equaling Vassar's total as a team. Ruddy added 10 points.

For the Brewers (4-8, 0-4), Alex Seff scored 20 points. Mason Dyslin and Jesse Brown added 12 and 11 points, respectively.

The first half was hotly contested with neither side able to gain much of an advantage. Hobart had the largest lead of the opening 20 minutes at just four points, with Vassar leading by as many as three. The first half featured 12 lead changes and five ties.

The second half started out in a similar fashion. Vassar's Chris Gallivan converted a traditional 3-point play to put the home team up 39-38, then the Statesmen seized control. First-year guard Tucker Lescoe sandwiched a pair of 3-pointer around a layup by Allen for an 8-0 Hobart run that gave the visitors the lead for good with more than 13 minutes remaining.

As the clock ticked under 13 minutes to go, Dougherty still only had the four points he recorded in the first half. He rejoined the scoring at the 12:53 mark by making a pair of free throws. That was the spark that ignited his scoring fire. Including the free throws, Dougherty scored Hobart's next 10 points (including a pair of 3-pointers), staking his team to a 56-48 lead with about 10 minutes to go. He made three more triples down the stretch as the Statesmen stretched their lead to as many as 20.

Hobart shot 52 percent from the field, including 66 percent in the second half. The Statesmen were 11-of-27 from long range, including 7-of-15 after halftime. Hobart sank all 11 of its free throws. Vassar shot 42 percent from the field, was 8-of-26 from deep, and 8-of-10 at the line.

Hobart will return home to host Union College on Tuesday, Jan. 10. Tipoff in Bristol Gym is scheduled for 8 p.m.
