Herons rally past Brewers

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.—The William Smith College basketball team scored the final five points of the game to eke out a 69-65 Liberty League win at Vassar College this afternoon. Senior guard Alyssa DiCampli hit the big shot down the stretch for the Herons, nailing a 3-pointer with 46 seconds remaining to put her team up by two.

Heron sophomore forward Mia Morrison posted her ninth career double-double with a career-high 23 points and a season-high 12 rebounds. Senior guard Melanie Patterson added 19 points. Sophomore guard Olivia Hughes chipped in nine points and seven rebounds. DiCampli finished with seven points and a game-high three steals, two more than the Brewers posted as a team.

Vassar had four players finish in double figures led by Sophie Nick's 19 points. Maeve Sussman contributed 11 points and seven rebounds. Isa Peczuh scored 10 points. Kim Romanoff also netted 10 points to go with a team-high nine rebounds.

William Smith (8-3, 2-0) had a slim 44-43 rebounding edge, but did more with its caroms. The Herons outscored the Brewers 23-8 in second chance points. William Smith also did a good job of protecting the basketball, committing seven fewer turnovers than its host. The Herons enjoyed a 16-10 advantage in points off turnovers.

Romanoff set the stage for DiCampli's dagger. Her layup with 1:23 remaining gave Vassar (5-8, 2-2) a 65-64 lead. The Brewers miss a layup that would have tied the game with about 30 seconds remaining. Morrison secured the rebound and Vassar was forced to foul. William Smith made just two of six fouls in the waning seconds, but it was more than enough as the Brewers missed their final four field goal attempts.

In a back-and-forth contest that featured 11 ties and 17 lead changes, William Smith held a 33-30 halftime lead. However, Nick converted a layup with 77 seconds left in the third quarter that gave Vassar its largest lead of the game, 52-44. But it didn't last long, the Herons scored the final two buckets of the third and Patterson opened the fourth with a triple to make it a one-point game, laying the groundwork for the dramatic finish.

William Smith returns home to face Union on Tuesday, Jan. 10. Tipoff in Bristol Gym is scheduled for 6 p.m.
