Escamilla clinches Hobart soccer win with late goal

Hobart College senior Joseph Escamilla scored the game-winning goal for the Statesmen soccer team with 1:18 left in regulation to secure a 1-0 win over host Rensselaer in a Liberty League game played tonight in Troy, N.Y.

The Statesmen are now 6-2-4 overall and 4-0-3 in the Liberty League. The Engineers fall to 7-5-1 overall and 2-3-1 in conference play. Hobart is unbeaten in its last 10 games. It was the Statesmen's fourth shutout this year. Junior Alec Kaminer played all 90 minutes in goal for Hobart and stopped all three shots he faced. It was his second shutout this fall.

In the 89th minute, Escamilla scored his first goal of the season on a header off an assist from first-year Juan Widoycovich. It was Widoycovich's first collegiate point.

The Statesmen finished with a 12-5 advantage in shots. RPI held a 4-3 edge in corners. Matt LaBranche made four saves in goal for the Engineers.

Hobart is back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 17, when it hosts Cortland for a non-league game at 4 p.m.
