Herons rally past Ithaca 4-1

GENEVA, N.Y.-The William Smith College field hockey team rallied for a 4-1 Liberty League victory over Ithaca College on McCooey Field this afternoon. Four different players recorded a point in the victory for the Herons.
 
Senior Hannah Wood paced William Smith (11-3, 3-2) with five points for the second straight game. Classmate Alexandra Frary recorded a goal and an assist for three points. Savanna Lenker made a season-high 18 saves in goal for the Bombers (6-7, 1-4).
 
Ithaca opened the scoring at 14:59 of the first half on its first shot of the game. Brooke Novello redirected a Kendall Keil crossing pass into the goal. Keil inserted the corner for the Bombers and stayed along the goal line. She collected a return pass from the top of the arc fired a cross cage shot. Novello, who was standing on the opposite post, tipped the ball across the goal line.
 
William Smith tied the game in the 20th minute on Wood's first goal of the game. She blasted a shot off of a penalty corner past Lenker from the left side of the arc. Junior Fallon Adair was credited with an assist on the goal as the corner's inserter. The assist was her 12th of the season, moving her into eighth place on the Herons' single-season list.  William Smith stuck its nose out in front when junior Katie Battaglia notched her fourth goal of the season. She redirected a Wood shot into the cage. The assist was Wood's seventh of the season, which matches her career-high set two seasons ago.
 
The Herons dominated the first half, outshooting the Bombers 14-1. Lenker was the story in the opening 35 minutes, stopping seven shots.
 
William Smith extended its lead to 3-1 on Frary's fifth goal of the season. She fired a shot from the right side of the arc off of a penalty corner that deflected off of a defender and into the cage. The play was set up by a crossing pass from Wood. Ninety-three seconds later, Wood scored her second goal of the game. Off of a give-and-go with Frary on a penalty corner, she flipped a shot over a diving Lenker into the woodwork. The goal was Wood's 20th of the season. She becomes the first Heron in program history to record four 20-plus goal seasons. With five more points in today's game, Wood increases her career total to 212 points. She needs five points to match Assistant Coach Sophie Riskie's career record 217 points.
 
William Smith dominated the game from the opening whistle, outshooting Ithaca 33-5. The Herons earned 14 penalty corners to the Bombers' three.
In goal, senior Emily King made one save in the opening 61 minutes of the game. First-year Alexandra DeVito did not face a shot in relief. Lenker played all 70 minutes in the Ithaca goal, stopping 18 shots.
 
The Herons will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 20, when they host St. Lawrence on McCooey Field. The game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
