Schulz scores in final minute to clinch 2-1 win for Hobart

GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart College senior Patrick Schulz scored with 41 seconds left in regulation to secure a 2-1 Liberty League victory for the Statesmen soccer team over Vassar College today on Cozzens Field. The Statesmen improve to 7-3-4 overall and 5-0-3 in conference play.

Hobart served the Brewers their first league loss. Vassar is now 8-4-2 overall and 5-1-1 in the Liberty League. The Statesmen go into the final week of the regular season in first place in the league standings. Hobart is one point ahead of St. Lawrence who the Statesmen will host on Saturday, Oct. 28, at 2 p.m., after traveling to take on Utica in a non-league game on Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 7 p.m.

After a scoreless first half, sophomore Nick Wigglesworth put the Statesmen on the scoreboard in the 50th minute. His header slid just under the crossbar and came off a feed from senior Nick Dosky. It was Wigglesworth's first goal as a Statesman.

The Brewers answered just 1:31 later. Noah Snider pushed a pass ahead to Joe Novas through a crowd in front of the goal. Novas drilled his shot into the netting from right out in front to knot the game at one in the 52nd minute.

It appeared Hobart was headed for its eighth overtime of the season, but Schulz kept that from happening, recording his second goal this year. He carried the ball down the field on the right side and drilled his shot into the far left corner of the goal to secure the victory for Hobart.

Junior goalie Alec Kaminer played all 90 minutes in goal for the statesmen and made one save. Matt Marcelino made two stops in goal for Vassar. Hobart finished with a 10-9 edge in shots. The Brewers had five corners, while the Statesmen had just one.
