GENEVA, N.Y.—For the eighth time this season, the Hobart College soccer team went to overtime. This time senior
Adrian Colmenares' penalty kick goal in the 105th minute secured a 2-1 league victory over St. Lawrence and the 2017 Liberty League regular season title.
As the top seed, Hobart will host the Liberty League tournament semifinals and finals on Saturday, Nov. 4 and Sunday, Nov. 5, respectively. The Statesmen will take on the winner of the No. 5 seed Clarkson and No. 4 seed RIT quarterfinal match which will be played on Tuesday, Oct. 31 in Rochester. Tuesday's other quarterfinal will feature No. 6 Skidmore and No. 3 St. Lawrence in Canton. No. 2 Vassar earns a bye to the semifinals. The Statesmen are scheduled to play in the first semifinal on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 11 a.m. on Cozzens Field. The other semifinal, also on Cozzens Field, will begin at 1:30 p.m.
Hobart rounded out the regular season going unbeaten in the Liberty League with a 6-0-3 record. It's the second year in a row the Statesmen have earned the Liberty League regular season title. Hobart is now 8-4-4 overall and 2-2-4 in overtime games this year. The Saints fell to 7-6-3 overall and 5-2-2 in conference play.
Just 6:34 into the game, St. Lawrence went up 1-0 on a goal by Ryan Crouse off a free kick. In the final minute of the first half, senior
Hunter Critchlow knotted the game at 1-1. His team-leading fourth goal of the season came on a header off a corner kick sent into the box by first-year
Juan Widoycovich.
The Statesmen registered a 6-2 shot advantage in the second half and a 9-1 lead in shots in the first overtime, but neither team was able to find the back of the net. At 4:25 into the second overtime, St. Lawrence was whistled for a foul inside the box and Hobart was awarded the penalty kick. Colmenares drilled his shot into the back of the net to secure the victory. It was Colmenares' second goal this year and second game winner of the season.
Hobart finished with a 23-7 advantage in shots and a 12-4 lead in corners. Junior
Alec Kaminer played all 140:25 in goal for the Statesmen and made one save. Mike Smith played all game in goal for St. Lawrence and stopped five shots.
