Hobart advances to league tournament championship game

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College soccer team defeated RIT 2-0 in a Liberty League tournament semifinal played this morning on Cozzens Field. The Statesmen advance to the tournament championship game tomorrow, Nov. 5, at 1:30 p.m.

It's the first time the Statesmen have advanced to the tournament championship game since 2009. Hobart is now 9-4-4 overall this season. RIT finishes the season with an 8-6-3 record. The Statesmen will face Vassar for the tournament title. The Brewers topped St. Lawrence 1-0 in the second tournament semifinal played this afternoon on Cozzens Field.

After a scoreless first half, the Statesmen broke through for two goals in the second half. Junior Derrick Acheampong struck first in the 50th minute. He collected a go-ahead pass from senior Hunter Critchlow and fired his shot into the back of the net from just inside the box for his third goal this year. In the 67th minute, junior Nick Wigglesworth added the insurance goal for Hobart. Sophomore Ben Barnes sent a cross from the right sideline to find Wigglesworth at the top of the box. It was Wigglesworth's second goal this season and Barnes first point this fall.

The Tigers came inches away from scoring a couple times in the first half. In the 39th minute, Nick Simone beat his defender and got by the Hobart keeper before firing his shot at the goal, but Statesmen defender, Binjo Emmanuel was there to clear the chance off the line. RIT's Mark-Vincent Sanson had a header go off the crossbar with 5:06 to go in the first.

Junior Alec Kaminer played all 90 minutes in goal for Hobart and made three saves. Peter Cinibulk played all 90 minutes in goal for the Tigers. The Statesmen scored on both of their shots on goal. RIT registered a 14-4 advantage in shots and had an 8-3 lead in corners.

The championship game will be played tomorrow, Nov. 5, on Cozzens Field at 1:30 p.m.
