Herons log perfect league record with 2-1 win at St. Lawrence

William Smith junior Sarah Olick-Sutphen scored the game-winning goal in the 83rd minute to give the No. 4 Heron soccer team a 2-1 Liberty League victory at St. Lawrence this afternoon. The Herons completed the regular season with a 15-1-0 record and a perfect 9-0-0 mark in conference play.
 
The Herons are the top seed in the Liberty League tournament and will host the semifinals and championship on Saturday, Nov. 4 and Sunday, Nov. 5, respectively. The Herons will face the winner of the No. 4 seed St. Lawrence and No. 5 seed Rensselaer quarterfinal being played in Canton on Tuesday, Oct. 31. The other quarterfinal will be No. 6 Clarkson at No. 3 RIT. No. 2 Vassar also earned a bye to the semifinals. The Herons will play in the first semifinal game on Saturday, Nov, 4, on Boswell Field. Junior Megan Barwick put William Smith up 1-0 5:20 into the match. After a series of rebounded shots, Barwick put the third rebound into the back of the net for her seventh goal this season. Katie Clemmer evened the score for the Saints at 26:06. Her long shot bounced off the crossbar and into the goal to end the Herons' shutout streak at 766:01. William Smith last let up a goal to Skidmore back on Sept. 23.
 
Olick-Sutphen registered the game winner with 7:11 left in regulation. First-year Sheila McQuillen set up the play. It was Olick-Sutphen's second goal this fall.
 
The Herons finished with a 22-5 advantage in shots and a 10-1 led in corners. Junior Veronica Romines played all 90 minutes in goal for William Smith and made three saves. Samantha Allen stopped 11 shots in goal for the Saints. St. Lawrence finished the regular season with a 10-6-0 overall record and a 5-4-0 mark in conference play.
