GENEVA, N.Y.—The third-ranked William Smith College soccer team advanced to the Liberty League Tournament Championship match with a 3-0 semifinal win over St. Lawrence University on Boswell Field this afternoon.
The Herons (16-1-0, 9-0-0) earned their 13th consecutive victory to advance to the conference title match for the 11th straight season. William Smith outshot the Saints 16-2 and had a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Sophomore
Elizabeth Moore opened the scoring in the 12th minute. The Herons were awarded a free kick about 40 yards away from the SLU goal. The ball was served into the box where it was headed by three different William Smith players, the last time by senior
Lauren Kogelmann was on goal and sophomore goalie Samantha Allen made the save, but couldn't corral it. Moore swooped in and knocked the ball across the line for the game winner and her sixth of the season.
In the 32nd minute, junior
Sarah Olick-Sutphen and first-year
Julia Keogh worked a perfect give-and-go for a 2-0 lead. Olick-Sutphen won the ball along the left sideline and passed to Keogh. Olick-Sutphen made a beeline for the top of the box. Keogh's pass was on the money and Olick-Sutphen's shot from 10 yards out was inside the left post for her third goal of the season.
The Herons carried their 2-0 lead into halftime.
After the break, Keogh earned a second assist on a similar give-and-go play. This time junior
Megan Barwick sent a pass to Keogh, who one touched a feed back to Barwick, who laced a low shot inside the left post for her eighth goal of the year.
Allen finished with nine saves, while William Smith junior goalie
Veronica Romines made one save to earn her eighth shutout of the season.
The Herons will play for the league championship and its accompanying automatic bid to the NCAA tournament on Sunday, Nov. 5 at 3:30 p.m. William Smith will face the winner of the second semifinal, Vassar vs. RIT.
