Wood breaks career goals record, Herons top Lakers 5-1

OSWEGO, N.Y.- The 20th-ranked William Smith College field hockey team cruised to a 5-1 win over Oswego in non-conference action this afternoon. Senior forward Hannah Wood became the Herons' all-time leading scorer with 90 goals, when she pocketed her second goal of the game in the 57th minute.

Wood led all players with five points (2g, 1a) in today's game. Her first goal of the game gave her 200 career points. Wood is just the second player in William Smith history to join the 200-point club. Assistant Coach Sophie Riskie '07 recorded 217 points in her four year career. Wood finished the game with 202 career points. Junior Fallon Adair recorded a goal and an assist in today's win.

William Smith (9-2) jumped in front in the ninth minute when Adair netted her seventh goal of the season. Standing on the left post, she deflected Hannah Wood's crossing pass out of mid-air and then batted the loose ball into the back of the cage. It came on the Herons' second shot of the game. Just over three minutes later, Adair returned the favor setting up Wood's first goal of the game.  Adair sent the ball into the middle to Wood, who collected the ball, turned, and fired a shot into the net.  The goal was Wood's 89th of her career and, at the time, tied her with Riskie on the all-time list.

William Smith continued to apply the offensive pressure in the first half, but Sarita Charap was able to limit the Herons' offense to just two goals. William Smith outshot the Lakers 12-0 in the opening 35 minutes.

Oswego (4-3) cut the deficit in half when Katie Reynolds scored her seventh goal of the season. She collected a rebound and stuffed a shot past Emily King. Lacey Woite was credited with an assist on the goal.

In the 49th minute, sophomore Kelsey Pierce scored her third goal of the year to give the Herons a 3-1 lead. She collected a loose ball just outside the attacking arc, dribbled around a defender, and sent a backhand shot past Charap and into the right corner.

Five minutes later, Wood fired a shot off of a Laker defender, who was standing on the goal line, to draw a penalty stroke. Senior Maura Moran converted the stroke for her fifth goal of the season. Moran is three-for-three this season on strokes and 11-for-11 in her career. Two minutes later Wood struck again. She collected a ball near mid-field and turned on the after burners. She beat the Oswego defense, juked around the goalie, and slapped a shot across the goal line for the 90th goal of her career.

In goal, senior Emily King improved to 6-1 on the year and made three saves in 61:53. First-year Alexandra DeVito played the final 8:07 and did not face a shot. At the opposite end of the field, Charap made 11 saves in the losing effort. Her defense also came away with a pair of defensive stops.

The Herons dominated the game from the opening whistle outshooting the Lakers 22-5. William Smith also earned seven of the game's eight penalty corners.

William Smith returns to Liberty League play on Saturday, Oct. 7, when it travels to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., to take on Vassar. The game against the Brewers is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
