The No. 20 William Smith College field hockey team was edged 1-0 by Vassar College in a Liberty League contest in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., this afternoon. The Herons are now 9-3 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
 
The Brewers improve to 7-4 overall and 2-1 in the Liberty League.
 
Vassar's Dara Studnitzer scored what proved to be the game-winning goal 19:23 into the contest. She tipped in a shot by Megan Caveny. The Brewers finished with a 17-7 advantage in total shots and a 9-3 edge on goal. Vassar earned eight penalty corners, while the Herons had five.
 
Senior 
Emily King played all 70 minutes in goal for William Smith and made seven saves, one off her career-high. Junior 
Samantha Petruzzo had a defensive save for the Herons. Liz Rotolo finished with three saves, earning the shutout in goal for Vassar.
 
The Herons are back in action on Friday, Oct. 13, when they travel to take on Union in another Liberty League game at 5 p.m.
