Statesmen top Bombers 2-0

The Hobart College soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to seven games with a 2-0 win over Ithaca College in a Liberty League match played today at the Bombers' Carp Wood Field in Ithaca, N.Y. The Statesmen improved to 4-2-3 overall and 2-0-2 in the Liberty League.

The Bombers, who are playing their first season as members of the Liberty League, fall to 4-5-1 overall and 0-3-0 in conference play. The win marks Hobart's third shutout this season. Senior Morgan Sawyer matched a career-high with six saves in all 90 minutes in goal for the Statesmen, earning his second shutout this year.

After a scoreless first half, senior Patrick Schulz notched what proved to be the game winner in the 48th minute. His first goal of the season came off an assist from sophomore Nick Wigglesworth. The assist marked Wigglesworth's first point as a Statesman. Sophomore Ben Orr added the insurance goal in the 82nd minute. It was his second goal this season.

Late in the second half, Sawyer made three saves in a row – on a Tom Dillmann shot in the 85th minute, on a Nate Mansfield header also in the 85th minute and a Nathan Schoen shot in the 89th minute – to preserve the win for the Statesmen.

Ithaca finished with an 8-6 edge in shots. The Bombers also held an 8-1 lead in corners. Dan Hinckley played all 90 minutes in goal for Ithaca and finished with two saves.

The Statesmen are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 7, when they travel to Clarkson for another Liberty League contest at 3 p.m.
