Evie Manning notched five points on two goals and an assist as the No. 5 William Smith College soccer team downed Ithaca College 3-0 in a Liberty League game played today on Cozzens Field.
The Herons have now won six straight to improve to 9-1-0 overall and 4-0-0 in the Liberty League. It was William Smith's third straight shutout and sixth this season. The Bombers fall to 3-7-0 and 0-3-0 in conference play in their first year in the Liberty League.
Manning opened the scoring just 10:13 into the match. Junior
Megan Richard sent a go-ahead pass to give Manning space to edge her defender and fire into the far left side of the goal to give the Herons a 1-0 lead. In the 64th minute, Manning struck again. This time she picked her spot in the top left corner of the goal, drilling her shot from the top right corner of the box. Manning leads William Smith with eight goals and 18 points this season.
Just under five minutes later, junior
Megan Barwick sent a corner kick into a crowd in the box. She found Manning who tapped the ball to sophomore
Elizabeth Moore, who laid out to push it over the goal line. It was Moore's third goal this season.
Ithaca had one scoring chance in first half. In the 33rd minute, Heron goalie, junior
Veronica Romines, came out of the goal to clear the ball out of the zone. Her kick was stuffed by Kristyn Alonzo. The ball went off Alonzo's back and headed for the goal, but it sailed wide of the left post.
With 19:25 left in regulation, Alex Epifani had the Bombers best chance at ruining the shutout. She carried the ball through midfield and into the box and had a slight edge on her defender, but she sent her shot wide of the left post.
The Herons finished with a 34-2 lead in shots. William Smith earned six corners and the Bombers did not have any. Romines played all 90 minutes in goal for the Herons and did not face a shot on goal. Emma Fruhling finished with 11 saves in goal for Ithaca.
The Herons are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 7, when they host Clarkson for another Liberty League game at 3 p.m.
