Herons top Golden Knights, extend streak to seven

The fifth-ranked William Smith College soccer team extended its winning streak to seven games with a 4-0 win over Clarkson in a Liberty League match on Cozzens field this afternoon.

The Herons improve to 10-1-0 overall and 5-0-0 in the Liberty League, while the Golden Knights fall to 6-3-3 overall and 2-1-1 in conference. It is William Smith's seventh shutout this season.

Senior Evie Manning recorded a four point game (1g, 2a), factoring into three of William Smith's four goals. Junior Megan Barwick finished the game with three points (1g, 1a).

The Herons opened the scoring in the 24th minute when first-year Julia Keogh buried her fourth goal of the year. She was on the receiving end of a Manning crossing pass. Manning dribbled down the right side and put a cross into the box. Keogh collected the pass and drilled a shot into the back of the net. William Smith doubled its lead just over five minutes later. Senior Theresa Lohr bent a free kick into the upper left corner of the goal. It was her first goal of the season.

The Herons extended their lead to three goals when Barwick pocketed her third goal of the season. Manning collected the ball outside of the box and dribbled towards the right post. With the defenders closing in on her, she sent a cross cage pass to Barwick, who collected the ball and sent a low shot into the net. Manning scored a goal of her own in the 65th minute. Barwick drew a foul deep in the offensive zone and sent the free kick into the box. Manning used her head to redirect the ball past the diving keeper.

Junior Veronica Romines played the opening 69 minutes in goal for William Smith. Junior Kaileen Murray came in for the final 21 minutes. Neither goalie faced a shot.  Elyse Green finished with six saves in 90 minutes in goal for Clarkson.

The Herons finished with a 17-1 lead in shots and a 10-3 edge in corners.

William Smith will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 13, when it hosts Union in another Liberty League game at 4 p.m.
