Herons shut out #24 Swarthmore to advance to NCAA 3rd round

GENEVA, N.Y.—The No. 2 William Smith College soccer team scored two goals in the first half to defeat No. 24 Swarthmore 2-0 in an NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship second round game played today on Cozzens Field. The Herons extend their win streak to 16 matches and are now 19-1-0 this season.

The Garnet finished the year with a 15-4-2 overall record. It was the first time Swarthmore had been shut out this season. The Herons have posted four straight shutouts and a total of 15 shutouts this season, which is tied for seventh on the William Smith single season list. The Herons' 19 wins are tied for fourth most in a season.

The Garnet came out strong with a near miss in the first minute of the game. Marin McCoy fired a shot from just inside the box that sailed just over the crossbar.

The Herons responded right away when junior Megan Barwick put William Smith up 1-0, 3:14 in. First-year Diana Colpoys pushed a pass to Barwick on her right side. Barwick blasted her shot from about 20 yards out just inside the right post. It was her 12th goal this season. The assist marked Colpoys' first collegiate point.

In the 40th minute, Manning capitalized on a misstep by the Swarthmore keeper. As she tried to take a goal kick, she fell and her kick went short, right to Manning, who drilled her shot into the left side of the goal. It was her team-leading 13th goal this year.

In the 12th minute, the Garnet had one of its best scoring chances denied by the Herons. Katie Dougherty fired a shot on goal that was saved by Heron keeper junior Veronica Romines. The rebound bounced back to Dougherty who took another shot, but the second attempt was cleared off the line by senior Lauren Kogelmann. About 10 minutes into the second half, Syndey Covitz had another near miss for the Garnet. She took one touch around her defender and fired a shot from just inside the box, but it went just high over the crossbar.

Romines finished with a season-high four saves to earn her 10th shutout this season. Amy Shmoys made six saves in goal for the Garnet.

William Smith finished with a 15-11 advantage in shots. The Herons had two corners. Swarthmore, which came into the match averaging more than five corners a game, did not earn a single corner.

The Herons advance to the NCAA Tournament third round and will face No. 14 Ohio Northern (19-1-2) on Saturday, Nov. 18. The Polar Bears topped Ill. Wesleyan 2-0 today to earn their spot in the third round. Check back to HWSAthletics.com for full details on game time and location once they are announced.
