GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College basketball team put four players in double figures in a 72-61 upset of No. 16 University of Rochester in Bristol Gym tonight. Statesmen guards
Jamal Lucas and
Tucker Lescoe led the way with 17 points apiece.
Hobart (2-0) used a gritty performance to win its second straight game over a team ranked in the top 25 of the D3hoops.com preseason poll. The Statesmen maintained a double digit lead throughout the second half of last week's 87-75 win over No. 19 St. John Fisher. Tonight, Hobart had to fight tooth and nail to the final buzzer.
The Statesmen outrebounded the Yellowjackets 41-35 and finished plus-two in turnover margin, despite committing 21 turnovers. Hobart shot 43 percent for the game, including 11-of-25 in the pivotal second half. Rochester shot 34 percent, including 9-of-29 in the second half.
Lucas was 4-of-8 shooting with a pair of 3s and 7-of-10 at the free throw line. Lescoe was 5-of-10 from the floor with two 3-pointers and a perfect 5-for-5 at the line. First-year guard
Dan Masino added 14 points, six rebounds, and a game-high five steals while junior forward
Matt Walsh chipped in 13 points and five boards off the bench. Sophomore forward
Edens Fleurizard shared game-high honors with eight rebounds.
Rochester got a game-high 25 points from junior guard Ryan Clamage. He was 9-of-15 shooting, including 5-of-7 from beyond the arc, and 2-of-3 at the free throw line. Clamage matched Fleurizard's eight rebounds. Junior guard Jacob Wittig contributed 12 points, six boards, and a game-high six assists.
Just over four minutes into the second half, the game was tied at 41. It stayed that way for nearly five minutes before Lescoe broke the stalemate with a layup at the 11-minute mark. The Yellowjackets retook the lead, 44-43, on a triple by junior guard Brendan O'Shea, but Walsh sank a pair of free throws less than a minute later to put the Statesmen in front for good.
Over the next 75 seconds, Dougherty sank a free throw and Lescoe added two more to stretch the Hobart lead to 48-44. Rochester was able to get within a single possession three times down the stretch, but each time the Statesmen scored at the other end to quell the threat.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair, with Rochester taking an early lead. Hobart rallied, using a 10-0 run to build its largest lead of the opening stanza, 24-15. With under 15 seconds remaining in the half, the lead was gone and the contest tied at 33. The Yellowjackets had the ball with the shot clock off, but Masino came up with a steal near midcourt and his layup in the waning seconds gave Hobart a 35-33 lead at halftime.
Hobart will be back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 28, when the Statesmen travel to Brockport for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
