Herons win 11th straight Liberty League tournament championship

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College soccer team captured its 11th straight Liberty League Tournament title with a 2-0 win over Vassar College today on Boswell Field. The Herons are now 17-1-0 overall and are riding a 14-game winning streak.

William Smith earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The entire NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship field will be announced with a selection show on NCAA.com on Monday, Nov. 6, at 1 p.m.

Vassar is now 10-6-3 overall. It was the Herons' 13th shutout this fall. Junior Veronica Romines stopped the lone shot she faced to secure the shutout in goal. Fiona Walsh made eight saves in all 90 minutes in goal for the Brewers.

Senior defender Theresa Lohr was named the Liberty League Tournament MVP. Senior Evie Manning, junior Megan Barwick, first-year Julia Keogh and junior Sarah Olick-Sutphen joined Lohr on the All-Tournament Team. Carolina Alvarez, Amanda McFarland, Ally Thayer, and Fiona Walsh represented Vassar on the all-tournament squad. RIT's Monique Polanco and St. Lawrence's Julia Mulhern all earned all-tournament honors.

At 35 minutes into the match, Olick-Sutphen gave the Herons a 1-0 advantage. She scored from right in front of the goal line. First-year Shelia McQuillen earned the assist on what proved to be the game winner. Just 2:50 into the second half, Barwick added the insurance goal. Her blast from 22 yards out came off a rebound of a blocked shot by Manning.

The Herons finished with a 23-2 advantage in shots and a 3-1 lead in corners.
