Game Recap: Hobart Basketball | | Ken DeBolt

1st half drought proves costly for Statesmen

SCHENECTADY, N.Y.—A first half scoring dearth proved costly to the Hobart College basketball team tonight. The Statesmen's rally from an 11-point halftime deficit came up short in a 67-62 Liberty League loss at Union College tonight.

Sophomore Sam Allen's layup with about seven and a half minutes left in the first half got Hobart (2-2, 0-1) within three of Union, 22-19. However, over the next seven minutes, the Statesmen went 0-for-8 from the floor and scored just four points, all at the free throw line by junior Jamal Lucas. Junior Colin Dougherty finally broke the drought with a layup to end the first half scoring. In between Allen's and Dougherty's field goals, the Dutchmen outscored the Statesmen 14-4 on the way to a 36-25 halftime lead.

Dougherty led Hobart with 16 points and eight rebounds. Allen also grabbed eight boards to go with 10 points. Lucas contributed 10 points and six rebounds.

Union's Kevin Weckworth led all scorers with 21 points, including seven during the home team's run to close the first half. He was joined in double figures by Greg King and Garrett Johnson with 16 and 10 points, respectively. Matt Liquori pulled down a game-high 12 boards.

Hobart still faced a 10-point deficit with over seven minutes remaining in the contest. Over the next six and a half minutes, the Statesmen went on a 16-9 run that closed the gap to just three, 63-60. Dougherty led the surge with eight points. Union was 0-for-7 from the floor during that time, but kept its drought from being more costly by going 9-of-11 at the free throw line.

With just over a minute remaining, Dougherty made an old fashion 3-point play and, about 30 seconds later, he sliced to the basket for a layup, cutting the Dutchmen's lead to 63-60. Hobart got no closer as Weckworth went 4-for-4 at the charity stripe down the stretch.

Hobart will be back in action at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 2 at Vassar (0-5, 0-1).
