Morrison nets 27 at Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.—William Smith College junior forward Mia Morrison scored a career-high 27 points in a 73-66 Liberty League loss at Vassar College this afternoon.

Morrison was 8-of-14 from the floor and made 11-of-12 from the free throw line. She also grabbed five rebounds and blocked two shots. Sophomore Emma Gallagher also contributed a career-high for the Herons, finishing with 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting with a pair of 3-pointers.

The Brewers had four players in double digits led by Sophie Nick's 16 points.

Playing for the second straight game without injured starting guard Natalia Baum, William Smith (3-3, 0-2) was able to stay within two possessions throughout the first half, entering the break down just three, 31-28.

Senior Kendra Quinn-Moultrie and junior Olivia Hughes made back-to-back baskets early in the third quarter to cut the Vassar (5-2, 1-1) lead to just one, 33-32. However, the Brewers scored the game's next 10 points and finished the quarter on a 19-6 run that broke the game wide open. Isa Peczuh led the charge with seven of her 10 points.

Ariella Rosenthal hit a 3-pointer with under seven minutes remaining to give Vassar a 59-45 lead. She finished with 14 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Over the next four minutes, William Smith used a 12-4 run to close the gap to six, but got no closer. Morrison started the push with an old fashion 3-point play and Gallagher followed with a long-range triple. The duo accounted for all of the Herons scoring during the run with Morrison notching seven and Gallagher five.

The Brewers answered the threat with consecutive baskets to push their lead back into double digits and went 6-of-8 at the free throw line in the final minute to close out the win.

William Smith's five-game road trip continues on Tuesday, Dec. 5, when the Herons visit Brockport for a non-conference showdown. The Herons and Golden Eagles tipoff at 7 p.m.
