Potsdam, N.Y. - The William Smith College ice hockey team upset Potsdam 2-0 on senior night at the Maxcy Ice Arena this afternoon. Junior
Maggie Salmon made 29 saves in the Herons' goal as she posted her second shutout of the season, extending William Smith's unbeaten streak to five games.
Â
The opening period belonged to the goalies as neither team found the back of the net in the opening 20 minutes. The Bears (11-9-1, 7-6-1), outshot The Herons 9-6 in the first 20 minutes. Junior
Krista Federow had two of the better scoring opportunities of the first period. Her two point blank shots were turned aside by Alexa Pfeiffer.
Â
The Bears appeared to open the scoring mid-way through the second period when Lucy Condon beat Salmon on a shot from the point. The referees waived the goal off because one official had called icing and another called a delayed offside. Neither blew the whistle; however, and play continued until the goal was scored.
Â
The Herons (6-11-5, 3-8-4) took advantage of the no goal call and took a 1-0 lead at 16:08 of the second period. Sophomore
Tess Madarasz wristed a shot home from a tough angle. The puck bounced off of Pfeiffer's right shoulder and into the net. Junior
Catherine Linehan and sophomore
Lindsay Brown were credited with assists on the goal. First-year
Taylor Morash nearly gave William Smith a 2-0 lead in the final minute of the second period. With The Herons killing off a penalty, Morash forced a turnover in the slot but had her wrist shot turned aside by Pfeiffer.
Â
Sophomore
Egan Sachs-Hecht's first goal of the season at 3:57 of the third period gave the Herons a 2-0 lead. Linehan and Madarasz were credited with assists on the goal. Madarasz sent the puck to Sachs-Hecht at the point. Sachs-Hecht fired a low shot past Pfeiffer's left pad and the right post.
Â
Mid-way through the period, Anna-Rose Bertin had a golden scoring opportunity from the left faceoff circle turned aside by Salmon's blocker.
Â
Salmon made 29 saves in her career-best second shutout of the season. With five wins on the year, Salmon has also matched her win total from last season. At the opposite end of the rink, Pfeiffer made 18 stops on 20 William Smith shots.
Â
Neither team converted on the power play. The Herons were 0-1 with the extra skater while Potsdam was 0-3.
Â
William Smith and Potsdam will be back at the Maxcy Ice Arena tomorrow afternoon to complete the season series. Faceoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
