Bears edge William Smith in overtime

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The William Smith College ice hockey team was edged by Potsdam 4-3 in overtime in an ECAC West game at the Maxcy Ice Arena this afternoon.

The Bears (12-9-1, 8-6-1) scored with 14 seconds remaining in overtime to snap the Herons five-game unbeaten streak. William Smith (6-12-5, 3-9-4), which needed maximum points from its last three regular season games to have a shot at the six-team conference tournament, pulled its goalie in favor of the extra attacker with one minute left in the overtime session. Potsdam's Delphine Léonard broke up a Heron clearing attempt and fired the puck into the empty net. The power-play goal was unassisted.

William Smith opened the scoring on its first shot of the game. First-year Kate Klimaszewski broke up a d-to-d pass along her own blue line and raced the length of the ice. She flipped a wrist shot past Alexa Pfeiffer for the first shorthanded goal of her career.

Jenna Patterson tied the game 33 seconds later when she tucked a shot past Maggie Salmon. The power-play goal was assisted by Shelbi Thacker. Potsdam held a 10-5 edge in shots, entering the first intermission.

Jordan Ott's first goal of the game gave the Bears a 2-1 lead at 12:04 of the second period. Her shot from the right faceoff circle squeaked between Salmon's pad and the goal post.  Anna-Rose Bertin and Rylie Murray were credited with assists on the goal.

The Herons tied the game 2-2 on sophomore Jordan Roetzer's fourth goal of the season. Roetzer, who was standing on the left goal post swiped home a Kiley Fewster rebound into the back of the net. Fewster's original shot was stopped by Pfeiffer, but she could not coral the loose puck. First-year Taylor Morash was also credited with an assist on the goal. Fewster scored a goal of her own at 16:02 of the third to give William Smith a 3-2 lead. She fired home a shot from the point that beat a screened Pfeiffer. Sophomore Laura Rollins and Roetzer were credited with assists on the goal.

Ott tied the game 3-3 forty-seven seconds later with an unassisted goal. She forced a turnover at the Herons' blue line, deked around a defender and wristed a shot past Salmon.

William Smith had an opportunity to win the game late, but Pfeiffer turned aside a Stephanie Hampton shot. Roetzer had a couple of chances early in the third period to add a second goal, including a 2-on-1 with Klimaszewski but her shot was stopped by Pfeiffer, who kicked out her right pad at the last second.

Salmon had 25 saves in 63:31 in the Herons' goal. At the opposite end of the rink, Pfeiffer made 20 stops in 64:46.

Potsdam finished the game with three power-play goals on eight attempts, while William Smith was 0-for-4.

The Herons will conclude their season next weekend, Feb. 17-18, when they take on eighth-ranked Oswego in a home-and-home series. William Smith will host the Lakers at The Cooler on Friday at 7 p.m. Faceoff on Saturday, in Oswego, is scheduled for 2 p.m.
